Might be great for the vigilant person filtering clear water. June 12, 2010 RB (Rocky Mountains, USA) I purchased this filter after using a buddies once. Compared to my MSR/Sweetwater Microfilter, the Hiker Pro was far more convenient to use and pumped easier. I was also intrigued by the "removable filter protector" adding "30% more capacity". Unfortunately, unlike my experience with the MSR/Sweetwater Microfilter, I found that these "Hiker Pro" filters are good for little more than 3-4 days in silty water...and that's after most of this water had settled in a bucket. The performance that wowed me with my friends quickly fell off after the first 2-3 quarts. By the time a little more than gallon had been through it, the pumping became so difficult that it felt as though something would break if I continued. Cleaning as per the instructions did nothing. My friend had his second Hiker Pro on the same trip and experienced the same thing. He was on his second due to the quick connect at the inlet cracking on his first which causes an air leak rendering the hose useless. This necessitates that part of the filter to be held under water to pump.
For my purposes and locale, I am thoroughly disappointed with this filter. However, to be fair, Katadyn does state that it is "for clear and slightly turbid water".... though, at the same time, I'd still say it's a stretch to recommend it for even "slightly turbid water".
In summary, this filter is appealing in its simplicity, ease of use, compact size and light-weightedness. I'm guessing it would be great for those filtering clear water only and who are exceptionally careful with their gear given the vulnerability of the quick connect inlet. That in mind, and being that the "removable filter protector" seems to be nothing more than a gimmick, I'd recommend the regular Hiker model for a $15 savings and slight weight advantage.
Been great so far... April 29, 2010 G. ASH (Duncan, OK USA) This is my first filter, and it has done a wonderful job so far. I've used it on three backpack trips and have filter about 20 gals of water through it. It works fast, and gives us good, clear water.
Don't Count On It! April 16, 2010 B. Fisher (Mid-west) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I used this thing gently and only filtered about 4 gallons of water through it total, the lower nipple broke off when I removed the silicon inlet tube. I'd read other reviews where folks complained of a weakness in the design of this area, but assumed they were careless in their use of the filter. All I can say is that I was especially careful with mine and still it broke off. Now the filter is useless. If I had it to do over again, I would not buy this filter. Of course, I recommend that you do not buy this, as it will leave you in a pickle some day when you need water. If you buy it anyway, please carry iodine tablets, or have some other backup water source--you'll need it.
Great Filter! Hasn't failed me yet! November 20, 2009 Stephen F. Miller (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have used the Katadyn Hiker Pro on wilderness canoe camping trips for three years now in tannin rich waters in Maine and the Adirondacks and have had no trouble at all.
Recently one of my camping partners had his MSI Mini-Works fail in short order but we were able to continue on with my Hiker Pro, providing us with clean water for the rest of our four day wilderness camping trip.
I tend to replace the filter cartridge every year before my spring canoe camping trips and this keeps me pumping clean water for the whole year.
The provided end cap fits the Nalagene bottles of many sizes and canteen water bags easily; however I recommend optional screw on cap attachments for Platypus water bags as they make your life can be much easier when pumping from steep, muddy banks without worrying about end cap parting from the top of the bag/bottle as you hang on and pump.
Easy to use and works fast November 16, 2009 Thomas Bloess (Duarte, Ca) I have tested it before and finally took it out on a backpacking trip. First things first, now that I am back from my trip I can report not getting sick, which is a great start. Secondly, I filled 2 liters of water in the time it took my buddy to figure out how to use his steri-pen, even though he may not be the brightest, the hiker pro worked really well. The water bladder adapter made the job easy and mess free as well. I would highly recommend this.
